Simple VFR Flight
Introduction
This web page describes a simple, short VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flight for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
This assumes that you have either Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 or FSX installed on your computer, and that you have the freeware UK Refineries scenery installed.
If you don't have this installed, it can be downloaded from http://www.flightsim.com:
Note that this page was written using Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, FSX commands ets. might be slightly different:
Set Up the Flight
- Start Microsoft Flight Simulator
- Select CREATE A FLIGHT on the left
- Press the CHANGE... button for Selected Aircraft
- Select the Cessna 172SP aircraft

- Press the OK button
- Press the CHANGE... button for Selected Location
- Select the Southend airport (EGMC)
- Select 24 as the Runway/Starting position

- Press the OK button
- Press the FLY NOW! button
- The flight will now load
- Note that you might wish to save the flight at this point:
- From the Flight menu, select Save Flight...:

- Input a title for the flight, e.g. Simple VFR Flight:

- Press the OK button
Do the Flight
- Press the F7 key twice, to lower the flaps
- Press the . (full stop) key to release the brakes
- Increase throttle to maximum
- Once your speed gets to about 60, pull back on your joystick to take off:

- Climb at about 15 degrees

- Once you reach about 1000 ft, level off and press the F6 key twice to raise the flaps:

- You should see some buildings to just below the horizon towards the right (these are outlined in red below):

- This is Coryton Refinery, use the joystick to turn towards this
- Once you are over the refinery, turn right and head due west:

Note that you should soon see the 02/Millennium-Dome ahead of you - head towards this
- You will soon see the runway at London City airport (this is outlined in yellow below):

- Turn so that you are in line with the runway, so that you can land
- As you approach London City airport, press the F7 key twice, to lower the flaps
- Lower the throttle to about 50%
- Aim to touch down at this end of the runway
- Just before you get to the runway, set throttle to 0% and level off
- You will now land
- Press (and hold) the . (full stop) key to stop the aircraft
